A vent-free fireplace has no glass panel and uses inside air for combustion. Vent-free fireplaces are designed to burn clean and efficiently so there is no need to vent to the outside.
A direct-vent fireplace has a non-operable glass panel that seals the combustion chamber. It draws in outside air for combustion and then vents the exhaust back to the outside.
A vented (direct-vent) fireplace draws air for combustion from outside and then vents to the outside. A vent-free fireplace draws air from inside for combustion and is designed to burn clean and efficiently so there is no need for venting.

Some of our wood fireplaces can have a gas log set installed. Please consult your manual to verify if your fireplace can have a gas log set installed. Processed solid fuel fire logs can also be used. Use only fire logs that are approved for use in a fireplace. Follow the fire log manufacturer’s recommendations and warnings.
Your fireplace is designed to work best when fueled with dry seasoned natural wood. Hardwoods are preferred to soft woods since the energy content of wood is relative to its density. Hardwoods will result in a longer burning fire and less frequent refueling. A moisture content of 15 to 20 percent is recommended.
Always check to ensure your flue damper is in the open position before lighting a fire (push flue damper handle forward and up). Is your fire too far forward? Move it towards the back of the grate with the poker. If smoking occurs an hour or two after lighting the fire, perhaps your well insulated house is too airtight and it is difficult for replacement air to enter and feed the fire. Open a window slightly, open doors to one or two rooms and see if this stops the smoking. Is a vent fan, exhaust hood or central heating/cooling system stealing combustion air from your fireplace? If their volume is enough, this can cause negative pressure and an unwanted down draft – smoking.
